The Ilizarov Method in Limb Lengthening
Limb lengthening is preferred as a surgical treatment option for patients experiencing leg length discrepancy or suffering from dwarfism. Today, such surgical procedures are used in the cosmetic field to gain a few inches of additional height for people who are shorter than average. Initially, the device invented by Ilizarov for limb lengthening was used for this purpose. Subsequently, many medical breakthroughs were made to make the procedure safer and faster. The latest limb lengthening methods maintain the same medical process (i.e., bones - femur or tibia are surgically separated, then distraction is done slowly at a rate of 1 mm per day until the desired height is achieved, and the apparatus is fixed for the bone to regrow in the gaps within a few months). Nowadays, different post-operative recovery methods are used. (For example, Ilizarov, HolyFix, LON, Precice 2, and Precice Stryde). Among these methods, Ilizarov or external fixator methods (Ilizarov and HolyFIx) involve limb lengthening achieved with a fixator without any internal bone support. The bones are attached to the external device, which supports daily bone growth. The risk here is the possibility of forming an open wound, as the device is placed externally and fixed into the bone with screw pins.
